　　　　圣玛丽米德是一个典型的英国乡村：恬静安宁，远离伦敦的尘嚣和迷雾，而且交通便利；规模不小的火车站，教堂，旅馆，几家便利商店、杂货铺和酒吧……还有一群爱嚼舌头的老小姐们，首当其冲是马普尔小姐。马普尔小姐个子高高，蓝色纯净的眼睛，粉红的脸颊，性情温和。她就住在牧师家隔壁，占尽了天时地利。老太太热衷园艺，修理花园的同时也把来来往往出入牧师家的人尽收眼底。村子里有点什么风吹草动的没有瞒得了马普尔小姐的；别人不知道的她也知道。虽是乡村，圣玛丽米德的风流逸事真不少。克莱蒙特牧师娶了比自己年少几乎二十岁的格丽泽尔达，家里住着个年龄和她相仿的侄儿丹尼斯，画室又租给画家劳伦斯。克莱蒙特温和持重，格丽泽尔达美丽活泼，丹尼斯调皮捣蛋，劳伦斯英俊迷人。这一家子已够村子里的人嚼舌头的了，村子里新近又搬来一位深入简出的太太，一位著名的考古学家和他那位活力充沛的年轻女助手。村子里人缘最差的要属普罗瑟罗上校了。他的前妻多年前不辞而别，现在的太太和女儿又被人风言风语、和劳伦斯扯上关系。上校三天两头找碴和人斗嘴，就连温文尔雅的克来蒙特牧师也被他弄恼了，这一天在午餐桌上宣布：任何人如果谋杀了上校，将会对整个世界做了一件大好事。此话说后不久，上校的尸体就在牧师的书房里被人发现，桌上还有一张他未写完的便条，到底是自杀还是谋杀？人们纷纷猜疑着。奇怪的事情一件接一件发生了。有人打出恶毒的匿名电话，树林里时时传来奇怪的声响，考古博士去向不明。大家或是隐瞒、或是拒绝告诉警察他们在案发时的去向。教区的副牧师行为诡秘，半夜里服毒自尽。莱蒂斯情绪不定，格丽泽尔达和丹尼斯也有意对克莱蒙特隐瞒着什么。别看马普尔小姐平时聊起天来唠唠叨叨，阐叙事实时言简意赅、立场坚定，就连警察也不得不承认，老太太确实头脑清醒、有条理，是最理想的证人。在她的帮助下，事情终于水落石出。
